Kamakura period
Monju Bosatsu (Manjusuri in Sanskrit) is ranked high amoung many Bodhisattvas. He is regarded as the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, who knows the origin of the world and serves on the left side of Buddha. Manjusuri exists to observe the precepts of people's everyday life.
There are fervent believers in Manjusuri in China and in Japan, in particular, where he is represented in various forms.
The statue of Gokei Monju (lit. Monju with five topknots) expresses the naive appearance of youth.
