About Shinagawa-juku
Shinagawa-shuku is the first post station on the Tokaido road, located in what is now Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo.
The town prospered through fishing and shipping, with many shipping and seafood wholesalers concentrated there, and was a place where many people, including feudal lords on their alternate attendance tours, passed through.
In the early Edo period, most of the trips were made by samurai on official business, but gradually, tourist trips for common people to visit temples and shrines also became more popular. Many teahouses lined the streets, and those leaving on the Tokaido road and those seeing them off would say goodbye with a drinking party at a teahouse in Shinagawa.
This model is based on a picture of the foot of Gotenyama, famous for its cherry blossoms.
