Hizen nagoyajozu byobu
This folding screen vividly depicts Hizen Nagoya Castle, which was the second-largest castle of its time, surpassed only by Osaka Castle.
The artwork captures the five-story castle tower in intricate detail, surrounded by a multitude of buildings.
On the neighboring hills, the military camps (Jinya) of daimyo gathered from across Japan are prominently featured, while the castle town below bustles with people and commodities from all over the country. Believed to illustrate the summer of 1593, this screen serves as an invaluable historical resource for studying both the castle and the bustling military hub of Nagoya.
Notice the lower-left section of the screen, where two massive Atakebune warships are depicted. Upon closer inspection,
you will see that they differ in design; the warship on the right is believed to be Toyotomi Hideyoshi's legendary Nippon Maru.
